What is SQAS?

SQAS (Safety & Quality Assessment System) is a recognised assessment system that helps improve safety, quality, security, and environmental standards within the transport and storage of dangerous goods.

Originally introduced to the South African market in 2001, SQAS provides a consistent way to assess Logistic Service Providers and Chemical Distributors. Furthermore, it uses independent assessments and a standardised questionnaire to measure performance across key safety and operational areas.

As a result, companies can better understand their current performance, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen their overall safety and quality standards.

Assessment Criteria and Requirements

The SQAS questionnaire assesses different types of Logistic Service Providers. The Chemical and Allied Industries Association (CAIA) regularly review and update the questionnaire to ensure it remains relevant and aligned with current industry needs.

Furthermore the standards for accreditation are high. During the audit process, service providers must achieve a score of 90% or higher to receive accreditation as well as meet all mandatory requirements before they can become accredited.

The questionnaire of transporting dangerous goods covers two main areas:

  • Core Requirements
  • Transport Requirements

The assessment includes 156 Core questions, with 36 mandatory requirements, and 237 Transport Services questions, with 91 mandatory requirements.
