Why background checks are crucial

According to MIE’s own data from 2025 the background screening process is shifting as a result what used to be a step in the administrative process is now moving to the main source of risk-management for your business.

With over 3.2 million screenings taking place in 2025 a trend in the hiring eco-system is appearing. Organisations are under more pressure than ever with trying to balance speed, adherence and potential employee quality.

The most requested background check remains the criminal record verification and was requested over 900,000 times throughout the entire year. Risk levels are increasing year-on-year which is why many of the core background check categories notably the criminal, qualification and identity background checks are becoming more important than ever.

South Africa’s growing unemployment rate, especially with younger candidates (18 to 34 year olds), is shifting this dynamic. With such a large number of potential employees competing for limited opportunities it is up to the employer’s to place more emphasis on verification in order to manage risk therefore ensuring fairness as well as making more knowledgeable decisions when hiring candidates.
